krone.tv-Talk – How ÖBB convinces as an attractive employer

Date:

Hundreds of thousands of Austrians travel by train from A to B every day. Not only do the people you meet at the cash register or on the train work at ÖBB, there are many more jobs behind it. In the krone.tv talk, krone.tv presenter Raphaela Scharf spoke with Martina Hacker, HR Manager ÖBB, about how ÖBB wants to convince as an employer and in which occupational groups are currently particularly looking for new employees.

Especially in times like these, many new applicants are looking for a job that offers security. But the demands of the workplace have changed in many places. This is also the case at ÖBB, which currently employs 42,000 people in 130 occupational groups across Austria.

Looking for 3000 new employees every year
What challenges does ÖBB face? “We are definitely in the middle of a generational change. About a quarter of ÖBB employees will retire in the coming years. For us, that means that we have to look for 3,000 new employees every year,” calculates Martina Hacker, ÖBB HR Manager, in an interview with Raphaela Scharf. Which professions are in particular demand for personnel? According to Hacker, people are always looking for traditional jobs at the railways Train driver (engine driver), train conductor, shunting assistant, bus driver and of course also in ICT and everything that technology has to offer.

Desire for diverse and interesting areas of responsibility
What wishes do the applicants have? “The market has changed, it has become much more complex”, as a company you have to apply for potential employees yourself, as ÖBB’s HR manager points out. What applicants care about today: “Having a job that makes sense, ie diverse and interesting areas of responsibility”. According to Hacker, working from home is “a big problem”, as are flexible working hours and work-life balance. Especially among the young generation, namely Generation Z and Millennium.

Focus on good social benefits and work-study programmes
In the krone.tv talk, Martina Hacker also spoke with Raphaela Scharf about how the ÖBB can meet these wishes and scores as an attractive employer with good social facilities, including childcare and its own housing program. Another particularly important area that ÖBB focuses on: internship training.

According to ÖBB’s HR manager, the company currently has 2,000 apprentices in 27 different professions. It is particularly gratifying that the share of girls has already reached 20 percent – also in the technical professions, Hacker emphasises. Each year, the ÖBB takes on 600 apprentices, which has yet to be increased to 650 per year, “because that is of course also a large pool with which we can make up for our shortage of skilled workers”.
