A 37-year-old Moroccan had to answer for the regional court of Eisenstadt. The detainee had set fire to his cell in November. Four officers were injured.
The man was originally picked up in Graz and then came to Eisenstadt in November. After the detainee allegedly attempted suicide, he was placed in a special cell at the state police headquarters.
However, he may have smuggled in a lighter. He set fire to his cell. During the rescue attempt, four officers suffered from smoke inhalation. The damage in the central police station amounted to approximately 10,000 euros, one of the injured police officers stated in the witness interview.
The suspect confessed in court. He was sentenced to 15 months in prison – four of which were unconditional – for serious property damage and bodily injury due to negligence. According to the judge, his previously orderly lifestyle and the confession had a mitigating effect, but the combination of several facts made it more difficult. The verdict is not final. Two of the injured police officers received compensation totaling 550 euros.
