A traffic accident in front of the eastern portal of the Schwarzacher Schönberg tunnel in Salzburg has ended fatally: a pensioner (80) lost control of his car in wintry road conditions on Friday evening. After a frontal collision, only the death of an occupant of a vehicle, a woman from Salzburg (77), could be established.
According to the police, the 80-year-old ended up in the oncoming lane via the snowy national road (B311) on Friday evening. At that time, an Upper Austrian (58) was driving his car from Zell am See towards Salzburg. The two vehicles collided head-on.
Due to the violent collision, the Upper Austrian and his passenger, a woman from Salzburg (77), were trapped in the car. The volunteer fire brigade freed both persons with a hydraulic rescue device. The rescue immediately took the 58-year-old to hospital in Schwarzach.
Despite efforts to resuscitate the 77-year-old, only death could be determined, according to the police report. The 80-year-old driver of the car, on the other hand, was completely unharmed. None of the drivers was under the influence of alcohol or other substances. To clarify the cause of the accident, the public prosecutor’s office consulted an expert. Both cars have been seized. The Schönberg tunnel was closed in both directions for about three hours.
