Negotiations on the distribution of EU fisheries for 2023 will start this Sunday, the outcome of which will be known between Monday and Tuesday.

The 27 fisheries ministers of the governments of the European Union are negotiating today on the distribution of the European Union fishing fleet for 2023a division that the Basque fleet knows very well.
The government of Spain will revision of the Commission’s proposal for total allowable catches (TACs)which increases cuts for other species such as sole (-eleven%), the Cantabrian langoustine (-36%) or the pout (-10%) in the Atlantic, where the fleet has interests in 18 of the 26 stocks to be negotiated.
The European proposal also considers a 10% more fishing opportunities for hake south after 8 years of austerity due to the recovery of the species confirmed by the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES).
Brussels also has one increase the monkfish quota (+12%) or Cantabrian rooster (+33%), although on the contrary it provides one TAC 0 for western horse mackerel due to the poor situation of the species.
In the Mediterranean, the Commission proposes a 7.5% reduction in fishing days compared to 2022, which Spain rejects.
The representation of the Spanish government will also advocate increase the percentage provided for in the compensation mechanism to recover a share, up to 3%, if certain conditions are met and will reiterate the defense of the effectiveness of using more selective nets or other measures that allow maximum sustainable yield to be achieved for some stocks.
The European Commission is again proposing a maximum catch limit for red shrimp and the fishing effort regime for the hake longlinestwo measures against which Spain has appealed to the Supreme Court of the EU.
In addition, the possibility of establishing multiannual rather than annual quotas will be explored predictability for anglers.
The agreement is expected to be reached between Monday and Tuesday.
