Some avalanches that recently occurred in Tyrol went off slightly. After the precipitation of the past few days, the danger in the local mountains remains great and especially treacherous.
Sunday afternoon can be dangerous. The mix of hazard level 3 in higher areas and especially south of the Inn valley with better weather has it all. Such days are critical, the experts around the Tyrolean avalanche guru Rudi Mair know.
Concerned about improving the weather
“On Saturday there was only about four centimeters of fresh snow, by Sunday morning another ten to fifteen centimeters should have come – mainly from the Brenner to the east,” says Patrick Nairz, deputy head of the Tyrolean avalanche warning service. “The snow cover is weak and prone to disturbance, in some areas there is dangerously snowbound surface,” says the expert.
Should the weather actually improve on Sunday afternoon, this could attract more mountain enthusiasts to the site. “The fresh snow covers old snowdrifts,” Nairz advises caution. In addition, only partially snowed-in obstacles such as stones lie in wait.

In the Stubaier and Kalkkögeln, people have recently been swept away by avalanches on several occasions. Fortunately, all incidents ended lightly. Incidentally, Sunday is the first anniversary of the tragic avalanche death of a 14-year-old away from the secured slopes on the Venet.
