American linguist, intellectual and activist Noam Chomsky considers the Russian invasion of Ukraine “a war crime on the same level” as that of Adolf Hitler in Poland or that of the United States (US) in Iraq.

Chomsky (Philadelphia, 1928) participated this Sunday via video conference in the closing gala of the Barcelona Film and Human Rights Festival.

The 94-year-old intellectual has traced the origins of the current war in Ukraine to the agreement reached by the former Russian president in 1990 during the dissolution of the former Soviet Union. Mikhail Gorbachev and the American George Bush to accept the reunited Germany’s entry into NATO on the condition that it does not expand further east.

Decision that later US President Bill Clinton disrespected, emphasized Chomsky, describing Ukraine “a ‘de facto’ partner of NATO”and has pointed out that “we have to search agreements of any kind to try to prevent the escalation of the conflict”.

Chomsky has also referred to the situation of Julian Assangeheld in a British prison awaiting a decision on his extradition to the United States, and reminded that there is little awareness of his case, it takes so much activism to achieve greater dissemination.

Regarding the climate crisis, he warned that we have a few decades to avoid collapse and not reach “an irreversible point”.and has also urged activism to focus on “revealing the nature of climate threats” and, for the great powers, to work together to find a solution.
