New animals dead soon? – After culling: Denmark resumes mink farming

Date:

More than two years after the mass culling of all mink in Denmark, the first animals are on their way to establishing a new breed. 10,000 animals from Icelandic mink farms. From January 1, keeping mink for fur production is allowed again in Denmark. But even these animals can face death again.

Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen announced in November 2020 that all mink in Denmark – some 13.5 million animals – must be killed. The drastic step was justified by the fact that the coronavirus had mutated in the animals and passed on to humans. It later turned out that there was no legal basis for this procedure. An independent commission had therefore issued a report criticizing the prime minister and parts of her government.

Cost disputes can mean the death of animals
Because no government has been formed since the parliamentary elections on October 5, mink farming is threatening a decline before the restart, broadcaster DR reported on Monday. The food and veterinary authorities have not yet commented on who should pay for the prescribed, costly examination of minks for corona and another viral disease of about 86 euros per animal. The authority points out that the responsible ministerial post is currently vacant.

The Icelandic minks will arrive in Denmark by ship on January 4. If no solution is found by then, the animals may have to be euthanized, according to the trade association Danske Mink.
