Pioneers in Austria – Former garbage dumps will generate solar energy

Date:

The energy transition can only succeed with a massive expansion of renewable energy sources. However, the construction of photovoltaic systems in open spaces is a much-discussed topic. Therefore, large solar energy projects in Villach and Klagenfurt are in the spotlight all over Austria.

For more than two decades, household waste from the Villach waste management association was collected at the Müllnern landfill. In 2000 it was shut down and covered with earth. “Over the past 23 years, the landfill has subsided to the point that it can be closed off for good. The gases released during the decomposition processes are also only present in very small amounts,” explains Horst Niederbichler, director of the Villach waste management association.
