Eleven people were killed in a horrific head-on collision between a lorry and a shared taxi in South Africa on Monday. Four children were among the dead and three other people were seriously injured, EMS rescue service spokesman Sipho Towa said.
The horror accident had therefore occurred in the early hours of the morning on the national road N1 (a kind of highway, please note) in the province of Freistaat (Free State). Some passengers were thrown from the vehicle, while others became trapped in the wreckage of the taxi, Towa said. The cause of the collision was initially unclear.
“At around 3:25 am, the emergency services were alerted to a collision on the N1 between Verkeerdevlei and Winburg. A truck and a taxi collided head-on. Bodies were lying on the side of the road,” EMS spokesman Towa described the situation on the spot.
In South Africa and other African countries, serious accidents are common due to high speeds, poorly maintained vehicles and poor road infrastructure.
