A change in the law has been under review for a few days, allowing the police to confiscate cars belonging to extreme speed offenders in the future. But Vienna’s Transport Councilor has more to offer!
The “Krone” reported in detail: the amendment to the Road Traffic Act (StVO) not only deprives incorrigible speeders of their driving license, but also confiscates the vehicle and, in extreme cases, auctions it. The law, which mainly targets participants in illegal street races, has been under review for several days.
Someone who will certainly come up with a suggestion is Transport Councilor Ulli Sima. With the current draft, she sees a long-standing demand of the Vienna SPÖ fulfilled, but: “If you consciously accept that people die, then a prison sentence is also necessary,” Sima told the “Krone”.
Germany as a role model
Germany is a model for this, where a corresponding criminal law paragraph has been introduced. “We take away number plates and driving licenses and collect fines – but despite many targeted campaigns against the crime scene, we hardly notice a deterioration. Any prison sentences would have a strong preventive effect,” the alderman calls for even stricter action against the hooligans.
