PSOE, Unidas Podemos and Esquerra Republicana have approved in a closed-door meeting the presentation of the Congressional Judiciary Committee on the reform of the crime of embezzlement.
The PSOE, Unidas Podemos and Esquerra Republicana, in a closed-door meeting this Monday afternoon, approved the presentation of the Congressional Justice Commission for the reform of the crime of embezzlement, which is already included in the law suppressing the crime of sedition, the two crimes for which the leaders of the 2017 independence process have been convicted.
The penal reform of the PSOE and Unidas Podemos initially focused on the suppression of the crime of seditionwith additions such as the stiffening of penalties in case of concealment of the body, but the amendments registered last Friday broadened the purpose of the bill.
On the one hand, the PSOE and Unidas Podemos took the opportunity to system of election of magistrates of the Constitutional Court to circumvent the boycott of the conservative members of the General Council for the Judiciary (CGPJ) and clear the way for the candidates nominated by the government, former minister Juan Carlos Campo and former Moncloa adviser Laura Díez.
In addition, the two partners of the Spanish government proposed to add a new criminal offense illicit enrichment of public officials and they modified their own wording of the new assumption of the crime of aggravated public disorder.
And to this was added ERC, which for its part proposed to change the crime of misappropriation of public funds to reduce the penalty in cases where there is no personal gain. On this text, the parties of the Spanish government have agreed with the independents on a compromise proposal.
All of these amendments were approved in Monday’s presentation, making them already part of the bill that government parties plan to debate in the Justice Committee this Tuesday and in Congressional plenary before referral to the Senate on Thursday.
