Once again there was a violent attack on prison guards in Graz-Jakomini prison. A cage fighter from Chechnya did not want to adapt. But the support of the prison management is still denied to the employees. Now the union is thinking aloud about measures for the first time.
“We’ve lost control!” – There were serious abuses that prison guards from Graz-Jakomini made public in July in a letter to the prison management in the “Krone”. A call for help that caused a lot of commotion, but was not followed by those responsible.
Fight for support uninterrupted
Yet the prison guards continue to fight for support precisely because they have to endure inhumane things on a daily basis. For example, a Chechen cage fighter was recently transferred several times in one day because he rebelled and beat a prison guard.
Razor blade hidden under the skin
But, as so often happens, his behavior went virtually unpunished by the prison authorities. When the 30-year-old subsequently cut open his arm with a quartered razor blade he had hidden under the skin, he was taken to the psychiatric hospital at great expense.
At the emergency room, he remained furious and insulted doctors, nurses and the prison officer. He tore himself free from the ties and dismantled the facility. The result: another wounded.
“No Review”
The union is no longer ruling out action. “We have to admit with resignation that the head of the institution continues to boycott us. All efforts have not led to a reconsideration,” said Albin Simma, president of the prison wardens union. The harassment has reached the point where long-time employees prefer to transfer to the police force – although staff are desperately needed.
