Artificial insemination – IVF nightmare: couples have children from others

Date:

When Daphna Cardinale (43) and her husband Alexander decided to get pregnant via artificial insemination, she didn’t expect anything bad. But then came the terrible blow: the child she gave birth to was not hers…

What should you do if the child no longer resembles the parents after artificial insemination via the IVL procedure? This happened to Daphna and Alexander Cardinale from the American state of California. The now 43-year-old gave birth to her daughter in Los Angeles in September 2019 – but she had a significantly darker complexion than mom and dad, reports the British newspaper ‘Daily Star’, among others.

Because the child’s father in particular suffered enormously from the striking differences and justified doubts, it was decided two months later to have a DNA test done at home as a precaution. The shocking realization: Daphna had actually given birth to another couple’s child.

The same thing happened to another couple, who accordingly gave birth to Daphna and her husband’s baby. Deep sadness and despair increased, Daphne says. After all, the two women were denied the opportunity to carry their own child.

The children are exchanged
“There is no one who can give you advice. So we ended up kind of sitting together, the four of us, and it’s a blessing that we’re all on the same page,” Alexander says. With heavy hearts, the four parents made the decision to exchange their two children – even though they had missed their birth and the first months of life.

“Since then we have spent every holiday together. Since then we have spent every birthday together – and somehow we have brought the families together,” Alexander enthuses. The families are still in close contact: the two girls attended primary school and ballet lessons together.

The case ends up in court
Despite the happy ending, the four do not want to refrain from taking legal action against the clinic, which apparently made a mistake. VitroTech Labs is accused of accidentally switching and improperly implanting the women’s embryos.

“Daphna was surgically implanted – against her will or knowledge – with the sperm and egg of a man and a woman who were complete strangers to her,” the court documents said.
