Those who drive a car drunk or under the influence of drugs risk losing their license for life: Italian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport Matteo Salvini plans to revise the traffic rules and want the penalties for alcohol and driving under the influence of drugs after repeated serious cases in the country in recent days of fatal road accidents with young deaths.
“In the most serious cases, a lifetime suspension of the driver’s license should be considered. If a person knowingly drives under the influence of drugs or drunk, causing accidents, deaths and injuries, it is not enough to withdraw his driver’s license for a year or two. In such cases, a lifelong driver’s license suspension can and should be considered,” Salvini said.
A revision of the fines is also planned in Italy
According to the plan of the Ministry of Transport, Public Works and Water Management, those with a higher income must pay higher traffic fines. In the first half of 2022, the number of road accidents in Italy has risen sharply. Between January and the end of June 2022, 81,437 road accidents were reported, which corresponds to an increase of 24.7 percent compared to the same period in 2021. 1,450 people were killed in accidents, which corresponds to an increase of 15 percent compared to the first half of 2021.
