Watch out, ice cream! Freezing rain can cause dangerous situations on the streets and sidewalks on Wednesday night and Wednesday. Starting in the west, the ice sheet gradually covers the country and will also cover eastern Austria by Wednesday evening.
The reason for the risk of ice is the incoming milder air, which, according to the storm center, can only prevail at high altitudes for the time being. The ground, on the other hand, remains cold, so the rain that falls on it quickly turns to ice, making surfaces slippery.
From west to east
Caution is therefore advisable already at night in Vorarlberg and Tyrol, on Wednesday morning also in Salzburg, later in Upper Austria. During the day, the risk of freezing rain along the Danube will move further east. The freezing rain should reach Lower Austria and Vienna by evening at the latest.
Tips for drivers
Pedestrians should be careful, just like motorists. On the roads, the following applies: adjust your driving speed, because the braking distance is much longer on slippery roads. Therefore: keep your distance and rather give less gas, carefully steer, brake and accelerate.
