Commuters are currently out in the cold for a long time. Many failures, malfunctions and the thinned out intervals regularly cause chaos. The situation at Wiener Linien is precarious.
Again not a good start to the day for the suffering public transport drivers. In the middle of the morning rush hour on Tuesday, there were several delays on the metro lines U1, U2, U3 and U4. Of course, the chaos was not long in coming. On the U4, the outage even lasted until the early afternoon. However, there have been waiting times for months for the terminus Heiligenstadt. Wiener Linien says, “Only one track in Heiligenstadt is accessed during troubleshooting.”
In general, however, there have been cancellations, short tours or unreasonable waiting times for a long time – we reported. That much is certain: the situation at Wiener Linien is tense. On some lines, due to a lack of drivers, only one set runs at certain times of the day.
Waiting times of 30 minutes and more in the evening are now commonplace.
What are the reasons for that? “There can always be short-term disruptions that we have no influence on, for example due to rescue or police operations, demonstrations or traffic obstructions, but also illegal parking.” So it is always the others who are to blame.
As if that wasn’t enough, there was another broken track near Wiedner Hauptstrasse on Tuesday morning. This concerns tram lines 1, 62 and the Badnerbahn. The outage continued on Wednesday. The reason: rail experts found broken rails near the important traffic artery on December 13. The affected trams will probably not be able to run again until December 15.
Greens are now putting more and more pressure on the city council
The Greens, who are enthusiastic about public transport, have now had enough. The lack of reliability ruins the good reputation of Wiener Linien, explains councilor Heidi Folge (Greens).
Random trains have now made public transport a gamble and more and more people are switching to the car or bicycle. The city must take countermeasures as quickly as possible so that public transport does not lose passengers. Sequence made a request to Öffi councilor Peter Hanke (SPÖ) in the city council.
She criticizes that the Floridsdorf and Donaustadt districts in particular suffer from poor connections and would like good bus and tram lines.
