A supermarket chain has opened its first grocery store without cash registers in Munich. Customers can register there via an app, pick up goods from the shelves and simply leave. Cameras and sensors keep an eye on what is being bought and shortly afterwards the bill arrives on the mobile phone.
According to retail chain Rewe, it is the company’s first fully autonomous supermarket. The technology had previously been tested in two hybrid stores in Berlin and Cologne, in parallel with classic cash registers. The market in Munich is also still in the test phase. According to the group, the concept does not save on personnel, partly because the clean-up process is more complex.
Queues may soon be a thing of the past
The first client on Wednesday was the Bavarian Minister of Economic Affairs Hubert Aiwanger (free voters). He is happy that Rewe chose Munich as the location, he said. “If the concept catches on, queues at the cash registers could soon be a thing of the past.”
