Six Chinese diplomats have left Britain after a violent incident at the Chinese consulate in Manchester. British Foreign Secretary James Cleverly announced on Wednesday that the government in Beijing had arranged for the diplomats – including the consul general – to leave the country.
Police in Manchester had actually wanted the diplomats’ immunity lifted so they could be questioned about the violent incident in October – and had issued an ultimatum until Wednesday. During a pro-democracy demonstration in Manchester in October, an activist was dragged onto the grounds of the Chinese embassy and beaten by officials at the consulate, the BBC reported.
Have the right to “take action yourself”
At the time, China’s foreign ministry had defended the violent actions of its diplomats. Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin told the press in Beijing that diplomatic missions have the right to “take necessary measures to protect the security, peace and dignity of their territory”.
British Foreign Secretary Cleverly, who had previously summoned the Chinese ambassador’s deputy who was abroad, stressed on Wednesday that taking rule of law violations seriously has an impact. Britain will continue to do this and expect others to do the same.
