Wrong switch – trams in Innsbruck collide: 5 injured

An unusual accident caused a commotion in the inner city of Innsbruck on Wednesday. Two tram sets had crashed head-on. A total of five people were injured in the crash.

At around 1 p.m. on Wednesday, a 49-year-old tram driver drove the tram westbound on Anichstrasse in Innsbruck. At the same time, a 51-year-old tram driver was traveling east on the tram.

Turnout wrong
According to the current state of the police investigation, the 49-year-old drove left towards Bürgerstraße instead of straight ahead due to an incorrect activation of the switch position switching device and collided with the 51-year-old’s oncoming tram.

Five injured, one seriously
The tram driver and a 67-year-old and a 21-year-old passenger suffered minor injuries in the collision. The injured were taken by ambulance to the clinic in Innsbruck. As it turned out, another person, a 75-year-old Austrian, was seriously injured in the collision, according to the treating doctors.

Train lifted off the rails
The 49-year-old’s tram went off the rails as a result of the collision. During the registration of the accident and the clean-up work, the accident site was closed in all directions to all car traffic until 1.50 pm.

congestion and delays
The accident caused traffic jams in the center of Innsbruck. Both private and public transport were affected. There were some delays and interim deviations on the lines of the Innsbrucker Verkehrsbetriebe (IVB).
