The two German suspects are only 19 and 20 years old and already have a criminal record. According to the indictment, on September 1 they wanted to attack a taxi driver and steal his Mercedes. The apparently planned crime backfired. Now they are being sentenced to years in prison.
After a night of drinking, the duo came up with the idea of robbing a taxi driver they knew, according to the indictment from the Salzburg Public Prosecutor’s Office: they targeted the professional driver’s Mercedes. On that day in September, they called the taxi driver, got into his car and then took him to a forest near Weitwörth near Nußdorf am Haunsberg. Once there, the younger perpetrator pulled out a pocket knife.
Arrested without resistance
The victim realized that he was a perpetrator of a crime and tried to defend himself. The older perpetrator felt remorse, according to the police report: While the 20-year-old was talking to his accomplice, the victim was able to call the police. When the officers arrived on the scene, they were able to arrest the two suspected robbers without resistance.
During Tuesday’s trial before the Salzburg Regional Court, the two defendants made a confession. According to court spokesman Peter Egger, a jury found the two perpetrators guilty of attempted aggravated robbery: they imposed prison sentences of five and six years. Some rulings are already legally binding.
