Seven million affected – UNICEF: Hardly any access to electricity for children in Ukraine

Date:

The consequences of the Russian attacks on the Ukrainian energy infrastructure hit the children in Ukraine hard. Virtually every child in the country – about seven million – has no permanent access to electricity, heating and water, the UN children’s fund UNICEF said on Wednesday. Many of them are therefore no longer able to learn online.

Online classes are the only access to education for many girls and boys as many schools have been damaged or destroyed, it said. Without electricity, children’s contact with friends or relatives is also limited, which has a negative effect on their psyche. An estimated 1.5 million children are at risk of depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder and other mental health problems.

‘Children are facing a desolate winter’
“Millions of children are facing a harsh winter of cold and darkness, not knowing how or when the situation will improve,” said UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell. UNICEF has started distributing packages of winter clothing, water heating equipment and generators to frontline and newly accessible areas in Kharkiv, Kherson and Donetsk regions.

Attacks target Ukrainian power stations
Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24. Most recently, Russian attacks have targeted Ukrainian power plants and combined heat and power plants, among others. In freezing temperatures, many Ukrainian households are temporarily or even completely without heating, electricity and water.
