Incorrect accounts – The French judiciary searched Macron’s office

Date:

The French judiciary has searched the office of President Emmanuel Macron’s party. In addition, the office of the American consultancy firm McKinsey came under scrutiny. The investigation concerns Macron’s presidential election campaigns in 2017 and 2022. One allegation is that campaign accounts were not kept properly.

The investigations started at the end of October. Allegations include mismanagement of election campaign accounts, nepotism and aid to nepotism, as the finance prosecutor announced in Paris on Wednesday. The central question is whether French President Emmanuel Macron has unfairly benefited from the services of the American consultancy firm McKinsey.

The American company has not paid taxes in France for at least ten years. However, the company claimed to have complied with the law. Another excitement for the spring presidential election was the significant increase in external advisory spending during Macron’s tenure.

Landed positions in ministries
Justice is now investigating whether Macron received secret support from the company during his election campaigns, which he should have included in his campaign finance balance sheet. In addition, it must be ascertained whether McKinsey was favored by the government in awarding contracts and Macron and his party also benefited from this. The newspaper “Le Monde” reported in the spring that former and current advisers of the company were involved in Macron’s 2017 election campaign and that employees were even given positions in ministries.

In France, candidates’ election campaign costs are capped, based on equal opportunity. However, there are repeated allegations that not everyone complies. Politicians would disguise spending or manipulate bills downwards to cover up budget overruns.
