Shocking news – Ukraine discovers child torture chamber in Kherson

Date:

Ukraine has discovered a torture chamber for children set up by Russian soldiers in the liberated city of Kherson. Dmytro Lubinets, the human rights commissioner of the Ukrainian parliament, released harrowing details on Wednesday. Minors would only have been given water there every other day.

“We found ten torture chambers in the Kherson region, four of which were in the city of Kherson,” Lubinets told Britain’s Daily Mail. And added: “In one of the torture chambers, we also found a separate room, a cell, where children were kept. Even the occupiers called it that: a children’s cell.”

Search for evidence of Russian sex crimes
The gruesome discovery came as an international team of legal advisers visited Kherson to gather evidence of alleged sex crimes committed by the Russian armed forces as part of a massive investigation.

Kherson was recaptured from Ukraine
The city of Kherson was occupied by Russian forces for months before Ukrainian forces retook it on November 11 in what was one of Moscow’s biggest military defeats so far in the war.

Some residents who remained in the city during the Russian occupation told the Daily Mail that they were detained and tortured.

Referring to the cells in Kherson where children were held for torture purposes, Lubinets claimed that the occupiers had drastically cut water and food supplies for their underage prisoners and told them that their parents had abandoned them and would not return.

“There was psychological pressure”
“They have practically nothing to eat. Psychological pressure was put on the children.” For example, a 14-year-old boy was arrested and held in a cell for taking a photo of broken Russian military equipment, the human rights official said.

Shocking messages
The Ukrainian authorities had already discovered Russian torture chambers in several places. “I personally saw two torture chambers in Balaklia, Kharkiv region. A man was held there for 90 days. He said he was tortured. The Russians cut him with a knife, heated metal and burned him with it. He was taken out of his cell only to be shot several times and shot in the head,” Lubinets said.

The authorities want to hold Putin’s troops accountable
Meanwhile, the international law firm Global Rights Compliance, based in The Hague, is on the scene in Kherson to secure evidence of sexual assault. Their efforts are part of a wider international effort to support overwhelmed Ukrainian authorities trying to hold Russians accountable for crimes they allegedly committed during the nearly 10-month conflict.
