Dutch customs investigators found almost 1.3 tons of cocaine in Vlissingen, hidden in two containers with bananas. The containers were destined for a company in the coastal town that had nothing to do with the smuggling, the responsible public prosecutor’s office announced on Wednesday evening.
The drugs had been brought in from Ecuador via the port of Antwerp. The drug discovered on Wednesday had a street value of around 95 million euros and was packaged in packages of one kilogram. The cocaine has since been destroyed. A special unit consisting of corps of the shipping police, customs, financial investigation and the public prosecutor’s office is investigating the current case.
Rotterdam and Antwerp are the main ports for the import of cocaine from Latin America to Europe. The cocaine that arrives in the Flemish port city is mainly intended for drug gangs in the Netherlands.
The Dutch government recently announced that it would make millions available to combat drug smuggling. Port employees in particular should be screened much better, it is said.
