The dispute between a Turkish couple escalated in a Viennese apartment. With full force, the man stabbed the door with a knife. More and more women in Austria have to experience such traumatic events with a violent background. The number of femicides speaks volumes. In the case now under negotiation, the verdict is astonishing.
“When I saw the expression in his eyes, I thought my life is now over,” the 43-year-old described the tragic moments when her husband and father of their son went into complete panic.
It was July 30. After an argument over money, the 44-year-old grabbed a knife from the kitchen. He pushed the woman against the door of the apartment and, according to the prosecutor, yelled, “I’ll stab you!” Her husband waved the knife, which got stuck in the door. The five-year-old son hid under the covers, terrified.
Conflicting statements from the victim
So far, so terrible. But: did the man stab the door as part of a threat? As stated by Manfred Arbacher and Rudolf Mayer, the defendant’s lawyers, based on a statement from the victim recorded at the crime scene. Or did the Turk want to kill his wife with the knife and could she just dodge? At least that’s what the 43-year-old said under oath in the Vienna court.
A jury followed the defense
The jury followed the defense – it was not attempted murder. The frail man was therefore “only” sentenced to 14 months in prison, ten of which were suspended, for dangerous threats, coercion and bodily harm. Since the trained carpenter had been in custody since the crime, he was released immediately after the verdict and was able to go home.
