Because of crime – blows exchanged on the youth in the Tyrolean state parliament

Date:

Is there a problem with delinquent youth in Tyrol? The FPÖ says yes, the State Secretary for Security, Astrid Mair (ÖVP), contradicts that. This was discussed during question time in the Tyrolean state parliament.

It was still fresh in the memory of the Tyrolean politicians: on Saturday evening, November 26, an 18-year-old boy in Imst became so aggressive towards the police that he was eventually arrested. His friends came to the rescue and eventually rioted in front of the police station, the “Krone” reported. The subject was taken up again in the state parliament, FP boss Markus Abwerzger asked LR Astrid Mair, who is in charge of the security department: “How do you intend to act against juvenile delinquency?”

“Yes, school violence has changed”
Astrid Mair reassured: “You shouldn’t just believe the headlines here, you should also look behind the scenes. Then you know that the boys drank too much and lost control.” Mair continues that the crime statistics show a clear decrease: “In 2021 there was a decrease of 8.2 percent compared to the previous year. It is incorrect to say that crime is increasing. We really have a great childhood.”

Mair referred to the prevention work of the police and she is also in close contact with the education department. At this point, she admits a bit: “Yes, violence in schools has changed. Young people have suffered from the pandemic and have forgotten where the line is.”

Crime statistics speak plain language
Abwerzger was shocked: “We have a great childhood, that’s true, but there are quite a few who have gone down the wrong track. Frankly, I think it’s ridiculous to say that everything is normal.” Mair: “The crime statistics speak for themselves. Measures are planned, a lot is prevented. Believe me, I have learned a lot in 20 years of police work, I know exactly what drives young people, why they sometimes do things they regret. That’s where we have to start and that’s my job.”

“stay smooth”
There was no uproar among the young people present, but almost in the state parliament after Alexander Gamper (FP) light-heartedly opened his question with “Mrs Landesrätin, stay flexible”. He warned of riots on New Year’s Eve in Tyrol and asked what Mair wanted to do about it, to which she did not answer.
