When it comes to tasks like checking bridges, Asfinag has been using drones for a long time. Now the unmanned mini-planes have to be given extra tasks and take over reconnaissance flights after accidents or storms.
The use of drones has now become standard at Asfinag for bridges that are difficult to reach. “The accurate images of a bridge’s condition obtained in this way make it easier to plan any necessary renovation measures,” explain the infrastructure company’s managers.
In the future, Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) will also be used in the fields of natural disasters, road safety, documentation of construction progress, and in traffic and event management, such as in major accidents or traffic jams. “The goal is to integrate this technology into our workflow in a sustainable, economical and useful way,” says Thomas Steinbrucker of Asfinag.
