After two years of the corona pandemic, there are more Easter fires this year – but it is not always certain that such large “campfires” will burn. In Wölzing near St. Andrä in the Carinthian Lavanttal, flying sparks caused a building fire.
On Holy Saturday, the local fire brigades are also on duty – there is no day off for the volunteers. So they had to march to the traditional bonfire in Wölzing near St. Andrä in the Lavanttal – because an empty outbuilding nearby caught fire from flying sparks.
The fire brigade set up several extinguishing lines and quickly brought the fire under control. There are no injuries. The fire brigades St. Andrä im Lavanttal, Jakling, Eitweg and Fischering were deployed.
Return of Easter fires after pandemic
For the first time since the start of the Corona pandemic, the Easter bonfires, which are popular with young and old, are taking place again. And with them an ancient tradition returns – originally it was a Germanic custom in honor of the goddess Ostara. Sowing, growth, fertility and vegetation are celebrated.
Extra caution is advised this year, because after the dry winter of this year, a fire ban is still in place in many places.
