The war in neighboring Ukraine has led to a real attack on Poland’s voluntary internal security organisations. Homeland Security now has 36,000 soldiers, Defense Secretary Mariusz Blaszczak wrote on Twitter on Tuesday.
The national-conservative PiS government of Poland launched Homeland Security in 2017. Volunteers first undergo a 16-day basic training, in which they learn how to shoot, the basic rules of defense and how to behave in threatening situations. In total, the training, which mainly takes place at weekends, lasts three years.
Poland plans to expand its armed forces in the coming years. The number of professional soldiers will more than double from 110,000 to 250,000, plus 50,000 Homeland Guards.
training with the military
To attract more citizens to military service, the Polish army has been offering one-day military training since this fall. Blaszczak announced at the beginning of the week that the “Train with the Army” program would be repeated due to high demand. In the first round there were 4,000 places for civilian training, in January and February that would now be 8,000.
Lukashenko feels “threatened” by Poland
Ukrainian soldiers are also trained in Poland. Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko sees this as a “threat” to his country. A few weeks ago, the 68-year-old ruler lamented: “The training of fighters, including Belarusian radicals, in Poland, Lithuania and Ukraine for sabotage, terrorist attacks and the organization of a military mutiny in the country is becoming a direct threat.”
