He will have a lengthy conversation with Biden and will later address members of the House of Representatives and the Senate
Ukraine’s president Volodimir Zelensky will travel to the United States capital this Wednesday for what will be the Ukrainian president’s first visit to a foreign country since the Russian invasion of his country began. This was confirmed late yesterday by the US administration, which announced that during his visit Zelensky will meet with President Joe Biden and participate in a special session at the Capitol to address members of the House of Representatives and Senate.
At the meeting at the White House, which is set to take place at 2 p.m. (8 p.m. in Spain), Zelenski and Biden will have “an extended meeting” in which key members of the national security team and the Biden cabinet will participate.
Later, Zelensky will deliver a speech at a joint session of Congress demonstrating “strong bipartisan support for Ukraine,” as described in the White House letter. After his speech, the Ukrainian president returns to his country.
The Ukrainian president’s visit to the United States was discussed by both leaders in a phone call on December 11, and the White House formally invited Zelensky on December 14.
The visit, which went ahead at the last minute and has been kept secret for security reasons, will coincide with the Biden administration’s intention to send Ukraine a new defense aid package that will include Patriot missile systems, CNN reports.
Since last February 24, when the Russian invasion of Ukraine began, Zelensky has remained in Kiev and has not left the country, despite offers from some countries to the president to take refuge in the face of Russian aggression.
However, the president of Ukraine rejected all offers, insisting that, as his country’s head of state, he should stay during the war. So far, only the country’s first lady has personally represented Ukraine abroad, while the president has done so via video conference.
