The ski and travel routes – Heavy traffic is expected during the Christmas holidays

Date:

“Driving home for Christmas” is the motto for many Austrians just before Christmas Eve. In addition, there is the through traffic to the east, the influx to ski resorts and the still busy shopping traffic. The last weekend of the holiday is then devoted to the return journey.

The focal points in travel and excursion traffic will again this year be transit traffic from Germany to Hungary and further east, as well as the influx to ski resorts. The Women’s World Ski Championships in Semmering and the venues for the Four Hills Tournament will attract many visitors. The ÖAMTC predicts that there will also be waiting times at the borders due to the controls.

Shopping traffic and transit before Christmas
In the cities and in the large shopping centers, shopping traffic will be very busy again in the last days before Christmas Eve. The club occasionally expects a very smooth journey from Germany to Hungary, many of whom will depart for their home countries in the east and south-east. There is sometimes convoy traffic from Suben via the Innkreis, West, Buitenring and East motorways in the direction of Nickelsdorf. Due to the heavy traffic, an accident or a defective vehicle can quickly lead to traffic jams on this route.

Ski holiday after Christmas
Many spend Christmas Eve at home and only then go on winter vacation. On the weekend of New Year’s Eve there is a change of holiday services in the ski resorts. According to the club, delays should be expected in Tyrol on the Fernpass route (B179) and in Salzburg on the Tauernautobahn (A10). Traffic will remain lively on the following routes:

  • In Tyrol in sections on the Inntal Autobahn (A12), the Eiberg Straße (B173) and in the side valleys of the Inn Valley, such as in the Zillertal (B169), further before the tunnel areas on the Arlberg Schnellstraße (S16) in Tyrol and Vorarlberg.
  • In Vorarlberg on the Rheintal Autobahn (A14) before the Montafon exit and continue on the L188 to Montafon.
  • In Salzburgerland In addition to the A10, heavy traffic is expected in the Salzach valley (B311) and on the small German corner between Bad Reichenhall and Lofer.
  • In Upper Austria and the Styria delays may occur on the Pyhrnautobahn (A9) at the Voralpenkreuz – Liezen interchange and on the Ennstal routes (B320).
  • In Bayern the motorway connections Munich – Salzburg (A8) and Rosenheim – Kiefersfelden (A93) will sometimes be very heavily loaded.

returning traffic
The last weekend of the holiday is all about traveling back. On the one hand from the east back to Germany, on the other hand from the ski resorts to the metropolitan areas. In addition, you should plan waiting times at the border. Coming from Hungary for the border with Nickelsdorf towards Austria and towards Germany for the border crossings Suben, Walserberg and Kufstein.

Driving bans on provincial roads in Tyrol
On December 24, driving bans will come into force again in Tyrol for alternative traffic on the low-level road network in the districts of Schwaz, Kufstein and Reutte. These apply on Saturdays from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., as well as on December 30 and for the districts of Reutte and Kufstein also on Sundays. This measure is intended to prevent long traffic jams on the main roads.
