Alarm in a retirement home in Schärding in Upper Austria. There was a fire in a room. The fire brigade had to save 34 residents, two turntable ladders were also ready. The cause of the fire has also been found and for Christmas it is almost a classic.
Shortly after noon, the fire alarm went off in one of the upper floors of the extension of the retirement home, where seniors live in a kind of assisted living home. It quickly became clear: no false alarm. The corridor was completely filled with smoke and the escape route was closed.
All residents safe
Four fire brigades, including the Pocking fire brigade in Bavaria, which also has a revolving ladder, came to the scene. “Fortunately, it was no longer necessary to use the revolving ladders. We were able to bring all residents to safety via the stairwell,” says Markus Furtner, commander of FF Schärding.
According to initial information, the Red Cross on site treated three seniors who had inhaled too much smoke while extinguishing the fire, but no one was taken to hospital. Fortunately, the fire damage was limited. The cause of the fire has already been clarified: an Advent wreath caught fire.
