Nepal’s highest court has ordered the release of a notorious French serial killer from prison. Nicknamed the “Snake,” 78-year-old Charles Sobhraj, whose life story has inspired a Netflix series and several books, among others, is expected to be released from prison in Kathmandu this week after serving 19 years in prison.
The Frenchman – born in Saigon during the French colonial period – has admitted to killing several Western tourists in the past. He is said to have killed at least twenty people in the 1970s, including on the so-called hippie route in Afghanistan, India, Thailand, Turkey, Nepal, Iran and Hong Kong.
He was not found guilty for the first time until his conviction in Nepal in 2004, welt.de reports.
Will be released early for good behavior
The court ordered his release a year before the official end of his sentence, given his age, good behavior and deteriorating health. After his release, he had to leave Nepal within 15 days.
According to prison sources, Sobhraj is expected to leave Kathmandu prison on Thursday. The Supreme Court has already ordered his expulsion within 15 days.
