Research shows: – Giving is fun, gifts are bought less

Date:

Although the Austrian people like to give something away, they don’t like to do Christmas shopping. This is the result of a current motivational analysis by the Institute for Trade, Sales and Marketing (IHaM) at Johannes Kepler University (JKU) in Linz. As a result, most of the Christmas gifts in the country have already been arranged.

Only three percent of those surveyed buy their Christmas presents just before December 24. Gifts are mainly given (91 percent) to make someone happy. This motif runs through all age groups, household sizes, income classes and federal states. In addition, there are other motives for giving gifts at Christmas. 79 percent of respondents between the ages of 16 and 74 want to show they like the person they care about. 38 percent, mostly young men, give gifts because it is expected.

Because relatively less (16 percent) gifts are a motive to get something yourself. According to the study, this motive is more common among young and financially weaker respondents than among others. On the other hand, slightly more than every tenth person also gives gifts to show they can afford it.

Complete the purchase as soon as possible
In general, many do not like to look for Christmas gifts. Six out of ten Austrians do their shopping as quickly as possible, four out of ten only because they think they have to.
