United States Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced this Wednesday a new package of military aid for Ukraine from $1.85 billion which includes the Patriot missile system for the first time.

The chief of US diplomacy made this announcement a few hours after the President of Ukraine, Volodimir Zelensky, was received at the White House by his American counterpart, Joe Biden, in his first trip since the beginning of the war in the European country.

Biden conveyed to his Ukrainian counterpart his wish for the war to end with a “just peace,” while Zelensky took the opportunity to thank Washington for his support and remember that the battle continues.

With the aid known next Wednesday — the twenty-eighth package since August 2021 — they already are $21.9 billion destined for Ukraine by the administration of President Joe Biden.

Blinken has noted that Patriot missiles are “capable of shooting down cruise missiles, short-range ballistic missiles and aircraft at significantly higher altitudes than previous defense systems”.

“We will continue to support Ukraine for as long as it takes, so that Kiev can continue to defend itself and come to the negotiating table in the best possible position in due course,” emphasized the head of US diplomacy, who praised the “extraordinary courage” of the Ukrainian people in the face of “brutal attacks” by Russia.

Putin says there are no restrictions on funding for the Russian military

For his part, Russian President Vladimir Putin has inaugurated a meeting with the senior staff of the country’s defense ministry. “We don’t have any kind of funding restrictions, the country and the government give everything the military asks for, everything,” he stated.

In this sense, Putin has ensured that every platoon of the Russian army has one drone to fight the “enemy” in Ukraine, whose territory has been bombed by Russia in recent months with drones made in countries such as Iran.

The Russian president has also agreed to the proposal to extend the deadline 30 years the age at which Russian citizens can be called up.

Finally, Putin has called for improving the capacity of the nuclear triad of the country consisting of strategic aviation, intercontinental missiles and nuclear submarines.
