Austria in 4th place – Germany remains the leader in asylum applications

Date:

The crisis year 2022 is coming to an end – and never before have so many people sought protection in our country…

Not so many war refugees have come to us since the collapse of Yugoslavia 30 years ago. By the end of the year, more than 90,000 Ukrainians will be registered in Austria. However, they are not included in the asylum statistics because, according to an EU decision, they automatically receive a humanitarian residence permit in the Member States, which gives them access to education, work, social services and medical care.

Austria is in the top 4 countries in the official asylum figures of the Union until at least mid-December (see also the graph below). According to Brussels, there were 106,554 applications in this country in mid-December. The pace has noticeably slowed down recently with the end of visa-free travel in Serbia – the former gateway to the EU’s external border – for Tunisians, for example.

Meanwhile, Germany remains the EU leader in asylum applications this year. Since the beginning of the year, 190,749 people have applied for asylum in Germany.

34 asylum applications in Hungary
The “situation report” of the EU commission, which the newspaper “Welt” quoted on Saturday, is followed by France (115,820 applications) and Spain (11,220 applications) – after Austria with its 106,554 asylum applications comes Italy (78,897).

Incidentally, our “terribly nice neighbor” Hungary registered the fewest asylum applications this year with 43.
