White Christmas in Japan has proved a death trap for many islanders, with 17 people killed in the past ten days due to heavy snowfall. Thousands of households were also without power.
The dead include a man who fell from a roof while clearing snow and a woman who was found in a car suspected of carbon monoxide poisoning, national broadcaster NHK reports. Some people were also buried under thick piles of snow that had slid off roofs. It had snowed heavily in recent days, especially in the west of the country and in the northern region of Hokkaido.
Tens of thousands of households without power, flights and trains were cancelled
Municipal offices warned citizens to be careful when clearing snow and not to work alone. At times, about 20,000 households were without power and dozens of train connections and flights were canceled until Sunday due to the weather.
In some areas, such as the town of Oguni in the northeastern region of Yamagata, nearly a meter of snow fell within 24 hours, according to local media. The Japanese weather agency had asked residents of the affected regions not to travel as much as possible after cars got stuck on heavily snow-covered roads.
