Kazakhstan has handed over generators to Ukraine to alleviate the energy crisis. “We have received a wonderful gift under the Christmas tree from our brother people of Kazakhstan: 41 powerful generators for our medical facilities,” the Ukrainian Ministry of Health announced on Facebook. The move is remarkable given that the ex-Soviet republic is closely linked economically and militarily to Russia.
According to information from the Ministry of Health, the power generators will be used in the regions that have suffered particularly badly from the Russian missile attacks on the energy infrastructure. The regions of Mykolaiv, Dnipropetrovsk and Kharkiv are listed by name. Since October, Russia has been targeting Ukraine’s energy infrastructure to plunge the people there into cold and darkness.
Kazakhstan is part of the Russian-led Eurasian Economic Union. The Moscow-dominated CSTO (Collective Security Treaty Organization) military alliance also intervened in unrest in Kazakhstan earlier this year to secure the power of President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev.
Kazakhstan does not recognize Russia’s puppets
Despite this, Kazakhstan declared neutrality after the start of the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine. During a meeting with Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin, Tokayev openly refused to acknowledge the Russian annexations. In Astana, fears are growing that Russia may in the future also assert territorial claims on Kazakhstan, in the north of which many ethnic Russians live.
