A US court has sentenced one of the two masterminds behind the plot to kidnap US Governor Gretchen Whitmer to 16 years in prison. The sentence is well below the life imprisonment demanded by the prosecution, the American media reported on Tuesday. But it is the highest sentence imposed in the case to date.
The 39-year-old was found guilty in August of planning Whitmer’s kidnapping and using a bomb. This should put the politician’s security personnel out of action.
The plans came to light as early as 2020
Plans to kidnap Democrat Whitmer, Michigan’s re-elected governor in November, came to light in 2020 after FBI investigators used social media for discussions by a certain group about the “violent overthrow of certain parts of government and law enforcement” . .
In mid-December, three other men had already been sentenced to 12, 10 and 7 years in prison in connection with the plot.
