Avalanche alarm on Tuesday afternoon in the Hoch-Imst ski area in the Tyrolean Oberland! A huge sliding snow avalanche had come loose from a currently closed (!) slope. Because winter sports enthusiasts had repeatedly been spotted there despite the ban, a major search was started.
Around 2 p.m. in the Hoch-Imst ski area, an approximately 30 meter wide and 150 meter long sliding snow avalanche broke loose on the slippery, grassy surface of the currently closed black run. “Since there was heavy fog in the area of the foothills of the avalanche at the time and the upper part of the Alpjoch-Bahn ski area was closed, the avalanche was only noticed and reported by an employee of the Imster Bergbahnen around 3:15 p.m.
Hikers and winter sports enthusiasts observed
Despite the ban, winter sports enthusiasts and hikers have repeatedly been observed near the slopes. Therefore, a major search was eventually launched.
The search was called off in the evening
The avalanche cone was searched several times by mountain rescuers, sniffer dogs and alpine police officers. At around 6:30 p.m., the operation was finally called off without result. Apparently there shouldn’t have been any casualties.
