“It’s my hobby” – cars painted: Sprayer attacked ÖBB security

Date:

Year after year, the Österreichische Bundesbahnen (ÖBB) complain about millions of dollars in damage from graffiti and other graffiti. Finding the culprits is usually difficult. Not so on the night of Wednesday in Innsbruck: a 23-year-old German was caught red-handed by security when he defaced wagons. A security guard has “paid” for this with a big bang!

Around 01:00 two ÖBB security guards found the 23-year-old German. Apparently he had nothing better to do in the middle of the night than senselessly damaging other people’s property. “Equipped” with several spray cans, the suspect defaced two wagons with a wide variety of inscriptions.

Slap in the face
Security guards stopped the suspected vandal and confronted him. And that enraged him so much that he punched a guard in the face.

The 23-year-old was eventually arrested by the alerted police. “Six aerosol cans were seized. As justification, the German argued that spray painting was his hobby,’ say the researchers.

Cleaning trains extremely expensive
The exact extent of the damage cannot be quantified at this time. But it must be huge. Cleaning a single set usually takes four to five hours. “Special solvents must be used so that brake hoses are not affected or safety-relevant markings are not washed away,” said an ÖBB spokesperson after an incident in the summer.

Damage will be claimed by ÖBB
Across Austria, ÖBB is complaining about damage of around one million euros a year from various “paintings”. Consequential costs, such as those caused by train cancellations, are not included. Therefore, such crimes are consistently reported and the damages claimed.
