The mobile communications interest group Forum Mobilkommunikation (FMK) expects a record number of mobile data transmissions around the turn of the year. In the hours around New Year’s Eve alone, 43 million gigabytes are likely to be sent. In the previous year 2021, 35 million gigabytes were sent mobile on New Year’s Eve, in 2020 it was 31.5 million gigabytes. Around the turn of the year 2019/2020 before the pandemic, 28.5 million gigabytes were still sent in the hours around New Year’s Eve.
The reason for the one-third increase compared to 2019 is mainly due to the fact that more powerful smartphones and more complex chat and video apps, for example for high-resolution videos, require more data volume. However, in the past two years, due to the coronavirus, many people have met many friends and relatives in online chats for a virtual New Year’s Eve party.
The expansion of the 5G networks has been rapid since 2019, FMK emphasizes. More than 50 percent of the population is now technically (the rates are still expensive) equipped with the super-fast 5G system. In combination with the existing 4G networks, the FMK also expects no capacity bottlenecks around the turn of the year. Should radio cells nevertheless reach their capacity limit on New Year’s Eve, emergency calls are automatically recognized and prioritized by the network.
