Preliminary analysis suggests that it is a projectile of the S-300 air defense systems of Kiev.
The government of Belarus on Thursday indicated that its air defense systems intercepted a missile fired from Ukraine and stated that several parts of the missile hit the vicinity of the town of Gobarja, with no information on casualties for now.
The Belarusian Ministry of Defense has specified that the preliminary analysis indicates that the projectile was part of a missile fired by Ukrainian S-300 air defense systems. President Alexander Lukashasenko has ordered the Ministry of Defense and the Commission of Inquiry to investigate the incident, which took place between 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. (local time), according to BelTA news agency.
Authorities are investigating whether it was a similar incident to the one in November at the Polish border, where a Ukrainian missile allegedly trying to intercept Russian missiles hit, or if it was a missile intercepted by Belarusian air defense systems.
Lukashenko is a key ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin in the military offensive launched in Ukraine, although Belarus insists it does not want to become directly involved. However, Russian and Belarusian troops have conducted joint exercises. The President of Belarus has on several occasions warned of potential threats from neighboring countries, while the President of Ukraine Volodimir Zelensky even suggested the deployment of international observers to verify that there is no risk to the Belarusian side.
