The Danube is only six degrees “warm” – a temperature at which you would normally not want to go swimming. Two water sports enthusiasts in Upper Austria did not want that either, but ended up in the ice-cold water due to a technical hitch. Fortunately everything turned out fine.
Two 32-year-olds left a boat shortly after 1 p.m. on Thursday in the area of the Schlögen slope (Grieskirchen district) in the Danube and then drove upstream towards Niederranna. Suddenly the outboard motor snapped and the two immediately fell into the Danube.
They managed to swim to shore. With the engine running, the boat circled approximately in the middle of the river, but was rescued by firefighters moments later. The two were unharmed but hypothermic. They were warmed up in a fire truck and treated by rescuers.
