Tax cuts are over – petrol and highway tolls are getting more expensive in Italy

Date:

Gasoline and motorway tolls will become more expensive in Italy on January 1. The price increases mainly affect fuel prices. They had benefited for the past nine months from consumption tax cuts decided in March by the Draghi government and subsequently partially confirmed by Meloni’s government. Since the excise duty cut will not be extended in the new year, gasoline prices will automatically rise.

For both petrol and diesel, the discount has totaled 30.5 cents per liter in recent months. From the beginning of December it was reduced to 18.3 cents. According to the latest weekly surveys from the Ministry of the Environment, the national average price for green petrol is currently €1,625 per litre, the lowest level since June 2021. Diesel, on the other hand, was €1,689, the lowest level in almost a year.

Rates are traditionally updated
The toll on the highway in Italy is also rising. Rates are traditionally updated at the beginning of each year, but for the past four years, after the Morandi bridge collapse in Genoa that killed 43, they have been frozen. An increase could be seen in 2023 for the first time since 2018.

Highway authorities submitted applications for a toll increase
Motorway operators have submitted their requests for toll increases, which are currently being examined by the Ministry of Transport and the Ministry of Economic Affairs, taking into account the companies’ investments. The economic and financial plans of the various operators are on the table, but are currently in various stages of approval.

Italy’s largest motorway company “Autostrade per l’Italia” (ASPI) has applied for a two percent increase, the other operators higher percentages. On average, the fare increases proposed by the motorway authorities are much lower than those already granted in other European countries with similar concession and regulatory systems, such as France, where the increase is 4.7 percent, and Spain, with a plus of 4 percent, announced the Association of Motorway Operators Aiscat.
