In the final hours of last year, a Briton achieved the goal he set for 2022: run 365 marathons in as many days to raise £1 million for a cancer charity. Gary McKee, 53, completed his 365th marathon of the year in wet weather near his home in Cleator Moor, North West England, on Saturday to the cheers of a crowd of fans. In his marathons he covered a total of 15,330 kilometers, wearing 22 pairs of running shoes.
A few hours later, he also reached his fundraising goal. On New Year’s Eve, he raised £1 million (€1.13 million) for the Macmillan Cancer Support Foundation. “WOW,” McKee responded on Twitter.
It wasn’t the Briton’s first campaign for charity – he’d climbed Mount Kilimanjaro and flown over Brazil to raise money. In 2017 he ran 100 marathons in 100 days, in 2021 110 marathons in 110 days – and apparently got a taste for it.
22 pairs of running shoes worn out
In his daily marathons in 2022, McKee ran 15,330 kilometers wearing 22 pairs of running shoes. On the runnersworld.com website, he emphasizes that he is not interested in his achievement being recognized as a record: “It’s not about records, it’s about helping people.”
