Movie-like scenes unfolded in northern Mexico on Sunday as attackers in armored vehicles opened fire on a prison in the city of Ciudad Juárez. The aim of the attack, which killed at least 14 people, was to free prisoners.
According to the authorities, ten security forces and prison staff were among the fatalities and 13 other people were injured. At least 24 prisoners managed to escape from prison, the public prosecutor said on Sunday.
Accordingly, an armed commando had attacked the prison in Ciudad Juárez. The city of 1.5 million people is located on the US border and has suffered for years from the violence of the drug cartels that fight for control of the smuggling routes to the US.
Dozens of relatives of detainees held in the said prison asked the authorities for information about their relatives held there in front of the detention center.
Ciudad Juárez, directly across from the city of El Paso, Texas, is a drug hotspot and one of the most dangerous cities in the world.
