There are new details after the serious fireworks accident in the Lower Austrian Waldviertel. A 16-year-old from Lichtenau is still fighting for his life after a firecracker exploded in the hospital. One thing’s for sure, the boy shouldn’t have owned the firecracker, let alone set it off.
According to police spokesman Stefan Loidl, the injured 16-year-old bought the category F4 fireworks illegally in the Czech Republic in November. Category F4 fireworks generally pose a “major hazard” and are “for use only by persons with specialist knowledge”. The 16-year-old did not have this.
According to the police spokesman, he had lit the fireworks alone, no other persons were present. On New Year’s Eve, the youngster was flown by emergency medical helicopter “Christophorus 2” to a nearby hospital after receiving emergency medical attention.
18-year-old died in bullet bomb explosion
In St. Johann am Steinfelde, a cadastral municipality of Ternitz, an 18-year-old died in the night from Sunday to Sunday when a bullet bomb exploded in a field. A colleague was flown to a hospital in Graz with life-threatening injuries. A 17-year-old and a 19-year-old were transported to Wiener Neustadt State Hospital.
In the case it was not yet clear on Monday in which category the bullet bombs used should be classified. According to Loidl, several hearings were still pending.
The municipality of Ternitz is shocked by the incident. As Mayor Rupert Dworak (SPÖ) announced via Facebook, mourning flags were ordered. In addition, the New Year’s concert planned for Thursday was cancelled.
