According to Ukrainian sources, Russian rocket attacks hit the city of Lviv in the west of the country on Monday morning. There were “five violent rocket attacks simultaneously on the civilian infrastructure of the old European city of Lviv,” Mykhailo Podoliak, adviser to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, wrote on Twitter. At least six people died and others were injured. There were also reports of Russian rocket attacks on Kiev and Dnipropetrovsk.
Eleven people were injured in the attacks in Lviv, Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovyj said on Facebook. He did not specify where the missiles hit, but he said at least one civilian object was hit.
Rescue workers on their way to the crime scene
A resident of southwestern Lviv told AFP news agency he had seen thick clouds of gray smoke billowing from behind residential buildings. “The Russians continue to barbarously attack Ukrainian cities from the air,” Podoliak wrote. Rescue workers are on their way to the crime scene, the city’s mayor, Andriy Sadowy, told the courier Telegram.
Fire next to railway
According to the head of the Ukrainian railway company, Alexander Kamyshin, the attack also damaged railway infrastructure. He shared a photo online showing fire and smoke over a small building next to a railroad track. He said no passengers or railway workers were injured in the attack.
Destruction in Kiev
A Reuters reporter reported several explosions in Kiev. According to local authorities, several explosions were also heard in Dnipropetrovsk in the east of the country. Suspilne broadcaster reported two injured in attacks in the Dnepropetrovsk region.
Lviv, which is close to the Polish border, has become a refuge for refugees. At the beginning of the war, Western embassies were also moved from Kiev to Lviv.
Already 35 dead and 134 injured
On March 26, the city was hit by a series of Russian air raids. In another attack a few days earlier, the city was the target of an airstrike that hit an aircraft repair factory near the airport. On March 13, Russian cruise missiles targeted a key military base about 40 kilometers northwest of Lviv, killing at least 35 people and injuring 134.
Three military planes shot down
According to the defense ministry, Russian forces have used Iskander missiles to destroy four weapons and military equipment depots in Ukraine. That reports Tass news agency. In addition, three Ukrainian military aircraft and 11 drones were shot down. Russian forces had hit a total of 315 targets since the evening.
Russia and Ukraine again failed to agree on escape corridors on Monday. “For security reasons, it has been decided not to open humanitarian corridors today,” Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Iryna Vereshchuk told Telegram.
