Following a gun attack on a New York subway train last April, the suspect pleaded guilty to ten counts of terrorism on Tuesday. At a federal court hearing in Brooklyn, New York, 63-year-old Frank James admitted to shooting 10 passengers during the morning rush hour. He now faces life imprisonment.
James released a brief statement saying he had traveled from Philadelphia to New York City with the intent to inflict “serious bodily harm”. But he didn’t want to kill anyone. James previously denied shooting commuters in the busy subway on April 12.
The suspect posed as a subway employee
According to the indictment, he wore an orange jacket with reflectors and a yellow helmet to impersonate a subway employee. He then opened two smoke canisters in Brooklyn’s Sunset Park subway station and then fired more than 30 rounds. Ten people were hit by bullets, 13 others had smoke inhalation or were injured trying to escape. Miraculously, there were no fatalities in the attack.
James initially managed to escape, after more than 24 hours of manhunt he was arrested on the street in Manhattan.
The attack had been planned for years
According to the public prosecutor, he had been planning the attack since 2017. A weapons cache was found during a search of his apartment. Before the attack, James had posted several videos of himself on YouTube, which contained lengthy political rants and criticisms of the New York mayor. His lawyers said their client had mental health problems.
